“This is a garden of romance, somewhere one can lose oneself, a look to the past, a garden of great beauty.”

Carolside Garden is best known for its collection of historic roses and houses the National Collection of Gallica Roses. Many are represented in this garden - Moss, Alba, Damask, Centifolia, Bourbon, Floribunda and Tea roses.

The garden over many years has evolved into a series of rooms, each with a unique atmosphere and planted in different colours but each filled with roses amongst the soft, delicate and subtle planting of herbaceous plants.

The Herb garden with yellow and white roses amongst the fresh yellow greens of the herbs, the Secret garden planted in silver and pale pinks or the Hidden garden through the green gothic door in the beech hedge, only planted in white roses and violets with pale pink roses tumbling from the Apple trees.

The contrast comes in the Winter garden which in the summer relies on the texture and colour of leaves and uses burgundy and white plants to delicately bring it to life. The Apple orchard filled with Heritage apple trees is a wild and beautiful planting of white bluebells in the spring followed by Narcissus poeticus, Ladies Lace and Oxeye daisies.
